Independent Study - 12/9/11

Watch an episode of a TV drama; pick a scene which you think uses editing effectively to contribute to overall meaning.

REMEMBER: editing speed, relationship between shots & type of edit

If you can upload these before Thursday's lesson that would be much appreciated!

  1. I am analysing an episode of the American drama series: the event. I have focused on the scene where the character, Sean Walker is being held as hostage at gunpoint by a criminal and his associate is being ordered to drop their gun. The scene is tense and this is reflected in the way the scene is edited.

Firstly, the series uses a lot of non-diegetic sounds to enhance the tension within the scene and it also adds to the audience's perspective of the character's emotion. Additionally, the camera is seemingly free from a stand and the shaky camera movement makes it seem very tense and knowing that he is a hostage, it also reflects his state of mind. Furthermore, the editing is split evenly between all the characters, with close up shots, it shows their emotion and the gradual increase in the frame rate builds up the suspense. In addition, the panning used to show the criminal's escape is quick and blurry showing that their hope of catching him is fading away quickly. Finally the far shot is used to show the body language of each character when the gun is dropped.
